Have you recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea? Then it is essential to seek treatment as soon as possible to put an end to interrupted breathing during sleep, snoring, and all the health consequences that result from sleep apnea. Below we outlined some of the most common sleep apnea treatment options.

Dental Devices:

Sleep apnea dental devices, such as the Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) or dorsal device, are custom made by dentists using a plastic-like mold to form to the specific shape of your teeth and mouth. While you sleep, these small, safe, hygienic, and comfortable mouthpieces do all the work to reduce the air resistance that disrupts normal breathing patterns and leads to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea dental devices are an effective, non-invasive treatment that fits easily into your lifestyle. Some of the biggest perks of dental devices are the fact that they are comfortable, easy to wear, quiet, portable, convenient, and easy to care for. As a result, these devices are the perfect substitute to CPAP or oral surgery. Not to mention, research has proven that sleep apnea dental devices are an effective treatment option for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP):

This is the most common way to treat moderate to severe sleep apnea. It involves using a special machine while you sleep, which is connected to a nose or face mask via tubing. The machine gently increases air pressure in your throat to hold it open, thus preventing sleep apnea and snoring. It may take time for you to be comfortable using CPAP and you may even want to take off the mask or have difficulty falling asleep. If you can’t get used to CPAP, you might be able to try another sleep apnea treatment, such as a dental device.

Surgery:

Surgery may help you if your sleep apnea is caused by a discrete blockage of some part of your nose or throat. There are many types of operations depending on where in your nose and/or throat the problem lies. If you’re contemplating undergoing surgery to treat your sleep apnea, the risks and benefits need to be weighed with a sleep apnea doctor.

Other Treatment Options:

There are various other treatment options for sleep apnea including home remedies, weight loss, reduction of alcohol consumption, managing blocked nose, medicine, and more. However, it is not proven that any of these options are effective and they may even do more harm than good.

As the causes of sleep apnea vary, there is no single treatment option that works for everyone. The best way to figure out which sleep apnea therapy option is right for you is by going to a sleep apnea doctor.
